Medals awarded before January 1, 1996 required four years of service. Successive awards are denoted by Service Stars worn on the award medal. After 12 years of noble service, a member is authorized to wear a gold Petty Officer insignia.

To be eligible

Enlisted personnel must be the Petty Officer in Charge (POIC) of a small craft for six months before they qualify
